Milaidhoo Maldives has unveiled a reimagined concept for Ba’theli by the Reef, its overwater fine-dining restaurant set aboard traditional dhoni boats in the lagoon. The updated approach emphasises communal, family-style dining, reflecting the way meals are shared in local Maldivian homes.

Previously known for individually plated dishes inspired by the historic spice route, Ba’theli now offers a menu designed for shared enjoyment. The redesign was led by sous chef Nasreena “Natti” Ali from the sister resort Dhigali Maldives, working with the local team to adapt signature dishes and introduce new offerings rooted in Maldivian culinary traditions.

Key dishes include Fihunu Bodu Ihi, featuring grilled coral Maldivian lobster with a curry made from ingredients grown in the resort’s Chef’s Garden, and Dhivehi Raha, a selection of traditional mini desserts paired with screw pine ice cream made from the rare Maldivian kashikeyo fruit. The menu also incorporates Malaayfaiy, a traditional wooden serving dish used for communal feasts, alongside rice dishes, soups, breads and salads that reflect Maldivian heritage.

Ba’theli continues to draw on the Maldives’ history as a spice trade hub, incorporating flavours from Indonesia, India and Arabia. Guests dine aboard three dhoni boats, with views over the lagoon and surrounding sunset, providing a distinctive setting that connects the culinary experience to its island context.

The reimagined Ba’theli highlights communal dining and Maldivian culinary traditions, offering a refined yet authentic approach to overwater fine dining.
