How to Build Motivation for Wet, Windy Winter Runs

Winter: the season that many runners dread. The days darken, the temperatures drop, and conditions often turn icy, wet and stormy. Suddenly, the idea of lacing up your running shoes and heading out into the freezing mist becomes much less appealing. However, with the right mindset and preparation, you can build motivation for even the most uninviting of wet, windy winter runs. Here’s how.

Add the Right Gear to Your Arsenal

Switching your summer running gear for winter-friendly alternatives makes a significant difference to your comfort and motivation. A high-quality, weather-resistant running jacket is essential. Dealing with the elements in a jacket that allows movement while keeping you warm and dry can fundamentally change your perception of running in winter. 

It’s also important to invest in proper footwear with good grips to prevent slipping on wet or frozen surfaces. Moisture-wicking underlayers, thermal socks, gloves, and a warm hat can also go a long way in keeping you motivated. After all, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just unsuitable clothing.
