This year, Sirru Fen Fushi Private Lagoon Resort illuminated Earth Hour with more than just candlelight. The resort brought together guests, families and the island community for a day of meaningful action, discovery and inspiration. The 2026 celebration blended environmental stewardship with education and shared joy, reaffirming the commitment to protecting the natural world that makes the Maldives so extraordinary.
Growing a Greener Future – One Tree at a Time
The day began with a heartfelt planting session led by the gardening team, where children learned the importance of nurturing the planet as they planted young trees around the island. With smiling faces all around, the activity became a symbolic investment in the island’s future, an experience that will grow alongside them.
As the sun set, the beach transformed into a glowing tribute to the 20th anniversary of Earth Hour. A striking 60+ symbol, hand-crafted from coconut husks and illuminated with warm natural flames, shone against the night sky. The moment was brought to life with the rhythmic pulse of boduberu, the traditional, high-energy Maldivian music and dance often described as the “heartbeat” of the islands. Guests also joined an engaging Earth Hour quiz filled with fascinating facts about the environment and the ecosystem surrounding our island. Together, these experiences invited everyone to pause, reflect, learn and renew their connection to the planet and its fragile beauty.
Taste With a Story: Zero Mile Cocktails
Sustainability also took centre stage at Onu Onu Bar, where guests discovered our Zero Mile Cocktail Menu, a collection of drinks created using ingredients sourced within a one-mile radius of the resort. Each cocktail celebrated freshness, local flavour and the dedication to reducing environmental impact while offering a unique, island-crafted experience.
Experiences That Make a Difference
Throughout the day and into the evening, guests joined a variety of activities designed to educate, inspire and entertain while showcasing the beauty and importance of our marine and island environment.
Guests went in search of turtles, learned about ongoing conservation efforts and received underwater photos from their eco-adventure on a guided turtle-spotting snorkeling tour of the house reef.
Creative & Eco-Friendly Workshops
Paint Your Own Bag – A colourful, hands-on art session where guests designed their own hand-painted tote bags to take home.
Recycled Art Workshop – Children turned discarded materials into imaginative artworks while learning about recycling and responsible consumption.
Couples’ Canvas Painting – A serene, intimate experience for couples to unwind and create a shared canvas as a lasting memory of Earth Hour 2026.
Fun, Fitness & Friendly Competition – Guests enjoyed a trio of lively activities, from Beach Volleyball on the shoreline to a spirited Water Polo Fun Game in the pool, along with Social Archery, where they learned basic skills and enjoyed friendly target shooting.
A Celebration of Community and Conservation
“At Sirru Fen Fushi Private Lagoon Resort, Earth Hour is more than turning off the lights,” said Gerhard Stutz, General Manager. “It is a chance for our guests and team to unite in appreciation of nature, learn something new and take inspired steps towards a more sustainable future. The Maldives is a place of extraordinary beauty, and it is our shared responsibility to protect it.”
This year’s celebration reflected the resort’s ongoing commitment to conservation, from supporting marine life research to reducing waste and engaging our younger guests in the wonders of the natural world. With each activity, story, and shared moment, we continue to champion environmental awareness in ways that are meaningful, memorable, and uniquely Maldivian.
