Kandooma transforms waste into value

Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives has completed its first quarterly waste collection for the year in partnership with  Secure Bag Maldives, marking another step forward in the resort’s sustainability  programme.

The recent weigh-in and collection highlighted the growing impact of a  collaboration established in August last year, where discarded materials are  recovered, processed and reintroduced into the supply chain as new products.

Secure Bag Maldives operates with a clear purpose to repurpose, reuse and  resell materials through sustainable lifecycle solutions. This approach closely  supports the environmental commitments of Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma  Maldives and aligns with IHG Hotels & Resorts’ Journey to Tomorrow framework.

“Secure Bag and our team at Kandooma believes most resources have value  beyond their initial use. Through innovative recovery methods, materials that  would otherwise be discarded are transformed into high-quality, sustainable  products,” said Sharon Garrett, Director of Marketing and Sustainability at  Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives.

She added, “While it may seem unusual to receive payment for waste, this  model is widely adopted internationally and reflects a progressive shift towards  circular resource management. We are pleased to see it gaining traction here in  the Maldives.”

Through the partnership, the resort is able to responsibly handle a wide range of  materials including metals, baled paper, batteries, motors, crushed glass, aluminium cans, air conditioning components, used lubricants and cooking oils.  These are carefully sorted on the island before collection, with returns generated  based on volume and category.

“Krisel, our Sustainability Officer, and I take great satisfaction in seeing how  much waste is diverted from landfill,” Garrett added.

Over the past three months, the resort collected 3.7 tonnes of iron scrap, 1.4  tonnes of motor and compressor components, 544 kilograms of aluminium cans,  565 kilograms of air conditioning parts, and 3,200 litres of used lubricants and  cooking oils.

The initiative not only reduces environmental impact but also contributes to a  circular economy where materials are given renewed purpose and value.

Funds generated during the quarter totalled US$1,700 (MVR 26,592) and will be  reinvested into ongoing sustainability initiatives across the island.

Guests and partners are encouraged to explore the resort’s broader  environmental efforts through the Kandooma Green Book, available online at  https://holidayinn.aflip.in/HIRKM_KandoomaGreenBook.html  Located in the South Malé Atoll, just 45 minutes by speedboat from Velana  International Airport, Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives offers a relaxed,  private island experience with a strong focus on diving, surfing and family friendly stays.
